David graduated with a major in real estate from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1968. He began a career in real estate appraising immediately working in a series of positions including county property appraiser for the Supervisor of Assessments in Stephenson County, IL, as a staff appraiser for District 6 of the Illinois Department of Transportation in Springfield, IL, staff appraiser and head of the counseling department for Norman Benedict Associates in Hamden, CT and then head of the appraisal department for Citizens Realty and Insurance Company of Evansville, IN. In 1980 he founded David Matthews Associates, a full service real estate appraisal and counseling firm headquartered in Evansville, IN.
David has had a wide variety of experience over the past 4 decades having appraised and consulted on real estate in IN, IL, WI, MI, IA, KY, TN, GA, SC, WV, PA, FL, MA, CT, RI, VT, NY, TX, AZ, CA and WA. Property types appraised include farmland, forestland, livestock operations, houses, apartments, retail, shopping centers, industrial, offices, subdivisions and special purpose properties such as power plant, golf courses, river ports, coal mine, gas storage field, abandoned navy base, and more. He has extensive experience in valuations for acquisition of utility lines, highways, pipelines, easements, railroads, etc. He has given expert testimony in federal, state and local courts,
He is a nationally recognized expert in the appraisal of Rails-to-Trails acquisitions having valued those in ten states, given lectures on proper methodology to appraisal groups, and is writing the chapter on Rails to Trails appraisals for the new national publication Corridor Valuations. He has lectured on real estate at several universities, for various appraisal groups and to real estate groups in China, Russia and Canada. David is a member and past president of the Real Estate Counseling Group of America, a select group of 30 of the top MAI’s, CRE’s and real estate PhD’s in the US.
